Early 1940s fitted coat, volup/large size or plus size
I believe this coat was probably made during wartime along the restrictions set out by the Wartime Production Board during WWII. It’s a princess coat, but with a slimmer skirt than pre-war and post-war princess coats. Yet still is fitted and lovely—just with an economy of material.
42” bust
32” waist
17” bodice length (hard to measure—no defined waist seam)
22” sleeve
41” long
75” hem sweep with 3” overlap (WPB guidelines for misses’ sizes were 70”)
Fabric is a fancy weave wool gabardine—a gab with a diamond grid woven in jacquard.
very smooth-surfaced wool, with good drape. More of an autumn-weight coat than winter-weight.
color is classic early-40s, a cross between tan and terracotta.
buttons are folded brass and I *think* marbled umber bakelite, but I did not test. they look like it, have the right weight.
large pockets with flaps.
curved convertible collar
buttons on pocket flaps
lined in peach rayon crepe
label: forstmann 100% virgin wool (but no manufacturer label or store label)
shown with white crinoline (not incl)
Flaws: three TINY faint grey spots on the back skirt, all very small, shown—and I did not try to remove bc I only found them when steaming the whole garment. No smells or tears or pulls.
