Wonderful vintage 'Sardine' dish and stand with cut glass dish, hallmarked lid and stand.
This is a perfect little table accessory to serve sardines or could be used as a butter dish or preserves dish. The lid is EPNS and has a lovely little silver plated sardine handle, in lovely condition with little sign of ware.
The cut glass dish is perfect and has no marks chips or cracks.
The hallmarked EPNS also has a letter which looks like a fish sign followed by J and W with a number 2291 on the base.
I cannot identify this company hallmark but this is probably from a 19th century manufacturer and these are the 'Journeymans' marks. Lovely for a Christmas gift or birthday present. Great retro table decor.
The workers of the plate industry were often paid on a pro rata basis. The foreman counted their output so that they could be fairly rewarded at the end of the week. In larger companies, to distinguish between each workers' ware, each member had his own punch with his initials, or, more often, with a small symbol. The number is the pattern mark. 2291 is the production/pattern/stock number used by the firm to identify the item.
The lid has 4 EPNS. The dish measures, 8.25" long and 3.25" across.
I also have a sardine fork with mother of pearl handle for sale which would be perfect to go with this dish.
