VINTAGE 3-PIECE CERAMIC TEA SET - LILACS IN LAVENDER & VIOLET WITH GOLD TRIM - LARGE GLOBE TEAPOT WITH CREAMER AND SUGAR BOWL
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Unknown
HISTORY: The history of the teapot itself is an interesting one. Historically, the tea cup was actually first on the scene (in China). The teapot may have been created during the Sung Dynasty of China (960-1279 CE), but the first positive historical evidence of a teapot is from 1500 CE. The first teapot was called a Yixing teapot, created in the Jiangsu Province of China, near a source of a purple-red clay called Zisha. This clay was unique in that it had the ability to absorb the color, smell, and flavor of the tea brewed in teapots made from it. In essence, Yixing teapots became seasoned after repeated use. Because of that, these small teapots (one to two servings) were used to brew only one kind of tea each. Once trade with China became possible, the teapot traveled to Europe and was crafted in each country’s unique style and design.
DESCRIPTION: This three-piece tea set is made of white china and includes a large globe teapot, a creamer, and a sugar bowl. All three pieces are decorated all over with lavender and violet lilacs with green leaves. The teapot and creamer handles are notched at the top and also covered with the lilac design on top and left white underneath. Both sides of the lilac design on the handles are trimmed with a thin line of gold. Around the mouth of the creamer and the openings of the teapot and sugar bowl are thin lines of gold. The teapot spout also is trimmed in gold, while the teapot and sugar bowl lid handles are covered in gold.
