Formal evening dress from Filene's, Boston. "The French Shop" at the department store began in 1947. This could be from the the late 1940s, when they first went to Paris to find the latest fashions. This ensemble is in Very Good Vintage condition.
The retro mutton leg sleeves on the jacket are elegant and make a wonderful contrast to the wasp-waist. There are 28 loop button holes. (3 of the buttons are missing at the bottom. See photo 4.) The dress front neckline is typically discrete, early 1950s, but the back is cut low. There are no zippers, only hooks and snaps at the back of the dress. The missing buttons can be replaced with small buttons covered with black fabric. This is the only flaw I can see. The taffeta fabric is machine embroidered with gold metallic thread.
This is one of a lot of dresses I acquired from an acquaintance who wanted to find good homes for her mother's and grandmother's things. They all date from the early to mid twentieth century and are of various sizes. The first three dresses I posted from this lot sold very quickly. I will continue to post more as long as they last. I also have lingerie, opera glasses and feather fans from the same lot. If you are interested, please check back. Thank you.
